overview of JTAG
JTAG is a port that allows to directly attach and logically manipulate various kinds of silicon.
A typical setup would be: A host computer connecting over Parport, Serial, USB, Ethernet to a JTAG host interfacewhich connects to the JTAG port on the target device.
JTAG is a whole lot more than just programming of devices.
It was designed to be used in test and qualification of systems down to the chip level.
As such it can be used for debugging of Bootloaders, Drivers and other low level operations in embedded systems.
About the OpenJTAG project
This project aims to enable an embedded developer to program, verify and debug a system utilizing the JTAG interface
to Build an open design for a JTAG host interface. There are several options that could achieve this:

1. Emulate functionality of parallel port based "Wiggler" interfaces.
2. Increase programming speed against the parallel port based interfaces.
3. Add additional functionality. e.g. Built in serial ports
4. Add target devices.
